Root Canals

What is Root Canal Therapy?
Endodontic therapy, or root canal therapy, is a valuable tool in prolonging the life of a tooth that is diseased. To eliminate disease in these teeth, Dr. Denison can perform a root canal procedure. In a root canal, the infected part of the tooth is removed. The space is then sealed and your natural tooth is saved.
Thanks to the many advances in dentistry, root canal treatment is easier, less painful and quicker than before. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with root canal, or endodontic, treatment. You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment.
This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges.
Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is a dental procedure devised to eliminate decay or infection in the center of the tooth and save your natural tooth to maintain a natural looking appearance and reduce further dental procedures, such as implants.
At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.
If you experience any of these symptoms, a root canal may be the recommended course of action for you.
Reasons For Root Canal Therapy
- Decay has reached the pulp of your tooth.
- Infection or an Abscess are inside the tooth.
- Injury or trauma has damaged the tooth.
- Teeth Grinding or Clenching that has caused extreme wear to the tooth
How Does a Root Canal Save the Tooth?
During root canal procedure, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material. Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection. After restoration, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
