root canal Newport News DentistIf you have been told that you need root canal therapy then you are in good company. Millions of people each year rely on root canal treatment to save decayed or broken teeth, restoring the function of their teeth and preserving their smiles for a lifetime. In fact, root canals are one of the most common procedures that take place inside the dentist office today. Dr. Denison shares some common information about root canals and what you can expect during the procedure.

What’s Inside My Tooth?

The inner workings of your teeth are quite spectacular. Beneath the enamel of your teeth, there is a hardened layer referred to as dentin. Under the dentin is an area often referred to as the pulp, which is a form of soft tissue. This pulp is what contains the blood vessels, connective tissues and nerves of your tooth. It is important to know that your tooth can survive without its pulp. In a root canal, your dentist will remove the infected or inflamed soft tissue inside while disinfecting the area. Next the dentist will fill the area and then seal it to prevent future infection.  Once the treatment is complete, you will need a crown to protect the work you have had done.

What Can I Expect?

A root canal is much like getting a normal filling. You will receive the same numbing medication. Root canals got the bad name because they once were very time consuming, but now, with modern methods can be done in a much shorter period of time. For distraction, you might consider bringing your ear buds and favorite music to pass the time. Sedation is not necessary unless you are apprehensive and your dentist feels it is appropriate. In most cases, it is not. It is completely normal to fall asleep even without sedation and patients often say they do not see what the fuss is all about.

How Does it Feel?

You will get numb, just like any other dental procedure and you should not expect to feel pain during the root canal procedure. You may feel pressure but not pain. If at any time you do feel pain, speak up. At this time, Dr. Denison can administer more numbing medication. You probably won’t notice just how numb you are until you leave and attempt to smile at yourself in the mirror… it is completely normal to not be able to move the effected side of your face for several hours depending on the amount of medication used. This is an amusing side effect and nothing to worry about. Consider using it as a party trick… if you have a party to go to, that is.
